Biology Major graduating this spring

My name is Seth Hosking and I am sophomore biology major at Central Wyoming College. I am only a couple months away from graduating this spring! I keep myself busy at CWC with all the lab science classes I am taking. When I am not hitting the books I am either in the fitness center working out or in the gym playing intermural volleyball or basketball. Intermural sports are once or twice a week and is a great way to blow off steam.

I also work for INBRE at the college and have the Ray Winters scholarship. INBRE is an undergraduate research program that gives students an opportunity to work in labs and perform research. We are currently researching West Nile Virus. As for the Ray Winters scholarship, I work ten hours a week in labs. I’ll help set up labs for science classes and make materials needed for class. Between school, work, and fun there isn’t a lot of downtime this semester for me at CWC.

Campus Closed Friday & Monday

Central Wyoming College will be closed Friday, February 17 for all day staff in-service and Monday, February 20th for Presidents’ Day Holiday.  There will be no classes or business conducted on either day.

Last semester for Eric

Hello my name is Eric Inman, I am currently a sophomore at Central Wyoming College. My current major is General Studies but I am looking into the Nursing program here at CWC. I would like to eventually become a Nurse Practitioner. I graduated from Wind River High School in Pavillion, WY. This is my second year as a Quality Leader and I serve as Vice President for the group.

College has been a great experience for me, I have met many life-long friends and I have learned a lot about myself. Last semester I had the opportunity to live on campus and it was a good experience as the college offers many activities such as movie night in the theater every Wednesday and intramural sports. One of my favorite things about CWC is that there is usually something to do with activities on campus and the activities department is constantly getting new ideas and trying to involve everyone.

Academically, CWC can compete amongst the top Universities in my opinion. There are great professors here and, due to smaller class size, they are able to provide one on one learning with students. I have found this to be very helpful. This is my last semester at CWC; it has helped me learn so much about my self and has prepared me to be successful. I would recommend this college to anyone!

Valentine’s Day

Every second week of the second month, people all over the world celebrate a “couples holiday” known as Valentine’s Day. On this day, love is in the air. Roses are bought, chocolates are consumed, gifts are exchanged and reservations are made so that people can show their significant others just how much they mean to one another, and then we have the real world. The real world consists of people who spend February 14th alone with their 30 cats and Wheel of Fortune. For most of us we will consume the chocolates and ogle at those who have found someone with whom they can share this “holiday” with, but inevitably we will go home, alone, and cry ourselves to sleep thinking, “if only I had someone.” Bologna! Marriage rates are down and divorce rates are up so the fact that we are setting aside an entire day for couples seems a bit useless if you ask me. Being single is the key.

Yes, I know this sounds like a single woman hating on all those couples out there because I am unhappy with my own solitude but the truth is, I just don’t think that money should be wasted on something so superficial as Valentine’s Day. If I were to receive a box of chocolates, I wouldn’t have anything to do with them because I don’t like chocolate. If I were to receive a teddy bear, I wouldn’t have anything to do with it because I am an adult and if I were to receive flowers, they would die because I am not a botanist.

The execution of love declarations have severely diminished in recent years, mostly because we have seen it all before. I miss the good old days of love where Richard Gere chases after Julia Roberts fulfilling her childhood fantasy of being a rescued princess (Pretty Woman). Or the good times where Jake Ryan comes to your house in celebration of your 16th birthday when everyone else forgot, then you two share your first kiss over the flaming candles on your cake (Sixteen Candles). That is true love! But alas and alack we have come to the point in time where cynics such as I believe that no declaration of love is original or sincere anymore which makes days like the 14th of February a waste of time, emotion and money. Be single, be free and if you must be sad but don’t give into the social pressures of being with someone tomorrow, because Valentine’s Day is a sham supported by hopeless romantics and love struck fools who don’t know any better. In reality, the only people happy on Valentine’s Day are florists, Swiss chocolatiers and the Hallmark company. February 14th, just another day at CWC.

A Different Path to Graduation

Are you going to CWC with the intention of earning an AA or AS in General Studies, or still haven’t decided? Wouldn’t you rather be in the mountains, or skiing, or on the river?
Read on:

blacksilhouettePhoto by Matthew Seats

By the beginning of March I, and ten or so new friends, should hold new certifications as Wilderness First Responders and basic Avalanche I forecasters. After demonstrating a solid grasp of these skills we will then go backcountry skiing for 30 miles, canyoneering and rock climbing, and finish our journey with a 17 mile canoe expedition on the Green River.

All the while we will be living and traveling miles away from any other people. We will build our own snow shelters or sleep in tents, melt snow for drinking water and cooking, prepare all our own food over small backpacking stoves, practice our outdoor living skills and learn to teach others what we learn. We will try to shore up our telemark abilities, off-trail wilderness navigation, climbing, canyoneering and canoeing skills.

Our learning will go beyond wilderness skills though. We will learn, and teach, leadership skills, teamwork, individual and group communication and wilderness risk management. Natural history, expedition planning and environmental ethics will also be included. This semester will be as much, or more, about becoming leaders, instructors, team players and effective communicators as it will be about adding new knowledge to our “educational toolboxes.”

What is one of the best parts of this expedition? I will receive 16 credits from CWC and graduate college as a result of successfully completing the most incredible adventure I have ever undertaken. I am a student on the NOLS Outdoor Educator spring Semester as my final CWC semester, starting 2/13/2012.
For learning to safely and competently share what I love to do with others I will receive a full semester’s worth of credit and an AA in Outdoor Education and Leadership. Of course, I had to take three semesters of “general education” and program-specific courses at CWC too, but I saved the best for last!

All of you undecided major and General Studies students: if you love the outdoors and sharing your outdoors skills with others, talk to Darran Wells and take a serious look at CWC’s Outdoor Education and Outdoor Recreation programs. I think you are missing out on an amazing opportunity to LOVE every minute at CWC!

See you in May!

Art Education relaxing and fun

My name is Nicole, I am majoring in Art Education at CWC.  I really enjoy the program, especially my painting class!  I look forward to the class throughout the week. The great thing about this class is that you do not even have to be a great painter. The instructor, Matt Flint, is great at teaching his students how to paint well--even the beginners. After a couple weeks of classes, I have watched my classmates, some who have never picked up a paintbrush, become significantly better painters.  While comparing our work to students in similar classes at Harvard, we all greed we were at the same skill level.  The best thing about it is we are learning at a much cheaper price!

I also love this class because everyone is easy-going, we enjoy the three hours of down time together, and the opportunity to express our creativity.  My instructor works so well with all of the students in his class and we are all happy to be there.  He inspires me to continue in the education field!

QL student is a member of Rodeo team

Hey everybody!  My name is Danni Jo Hinman, and I’m a freshman this year studying athletic training and sports medicine and I’m also a member of the rodeo team. Want to know something cool about CWC?  Our women’s rodeo team is leading the nation in point standings! That’s right, the nation!

Now, what you may not know is that rodeo is unlike any other sport by this I mean there is no ‘class’ or ‘conference’ we compete against the whole united states at the College National Finals Rodeo(CNFR) in June. The way to get to the CNFR is to either qualify for it in each individual event, or to be the top 2 teams in each region.

If you are ever interested in coming to watch how we practice then stop by the equine center any day of the week at 5:30pm. Mondays and Wednesday the boys ride bucking horses and bulls, and we also team rope, then on Tuesdays and Thursdays the girls breakaway and goat tie while the boys calf rope.  Our coaches are: Rick and Lynn Smith and Drew Schrock.

Weird Double Major

I am a freshman at CWC and majoring in Theatre and Equine Studies. Many people look at me funny when I tell them my majors. Theatre and horses are my two favorite things and being able to major in two very different subjects is one of my favorite things about CWC. Both the Theatre and Equine programs at CWC are amazing. I love going to class which is good because I don’t have a whole lot of time to do anything else.
My theatre classes are wonderful. I learn new things about acting and myself as a person everyday and enjoy the people in my classes. My professors enjoy teaching and care about their students. In the evenings I rehearse for the CWC Theatre Department's production of Camelot. Rehearsals are a blast!
I love getting to ride my horse for class. It doesn’t seem like work at all. My equine professors are brilliant and inspire me to learn and be better.
The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know. I love being at CWC and being surrounded by a beautiful landscape and wonderful caring people.
Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions you will make. Choose the one that is right for you! Don’t go to a college because other people want you to go there. Go to college because you want to. If you don’t want to be somewhere it makes it hard to be motivated. CWC allows me to follow my dreams and I am grateful for this opportunity to learn and grow.

Pre-Health major all about science

Hello, my name is Josh Graham. I am currently a sophomore at Central Wyoming College. I am a pre-health professional major. My ultimate goal is to go to medical school and become an eye doctor. You can say that I have taken about every science coarse that is available. Aside from school work, I am involved in INBRE which is a biomedical science research group. We are studying the West Nile Virus here in Fremont County. Basically everything I do at college is all about science from working in the lab, to performing experiments, and helping prepare labs, I keep myself really busy.
College has been challenging for me, but it has been a great experience so far. I have got to meet new people and get involved in different activities. When I am not in class, I like to play intermural basketball and volleyball. Now don’t get me wrong, intermural volleyball and basketball is very intense. It may be like collegiate sports, but it seems pretty close. Other than reliving my high school dream of playing sports, I enjoy hanging out with friends and enjoying the freedom of college life.

Governor Matt Mead chats with students

Governor Mead was on the Central Wyoming College campus in Riverton Monday morning to chat with students enrolled in accounting.  Read the article here:  http://county10.com/2012/02/06/mead-to-meet-with-pavillion-residents-today-visits-cwc-accounting-class-this-morning/

Gaining experience and looking ahead

My name is Angelo Flores, I am 19 years old and graduated from Riverton High school here in Riverton Wyoming. I am in my second year at Central Wyoming College and plan to graduate at the end of this spring semester with Associate of Arts degree in criminal justice.  With my degree I plan on attending the University of Wyoming to get my Bachelors and eventually think about law school.

Because of my interest in criminal justice, I have been interning with campus safety 19 hours a week. I spend that time making routine rounds around the campus to make sure everything is safe and nobody is around after hours. We also are around for events on campus such as board meetings and sporting events to help provide a good sense of safety for all the participates.

My time here at CWC has been the best time of my life. With attending sporting events, meeting new people and all this extra responsibility you can really be yourself and grow up. The best thing for me that helped make my college experience is to being involved in almost everything CWC has to offer. From intermural events, being part of the criminal justice club to school trips—we are always finding some way to have fun. That’s just a preview of what CWC has to offer to find out more you must go out and get involved yourselves and don’t be afraid.

Second Year Quality Leader

Hello everyone!

My name is Benjamin Gale.  I am a second year student here at Central Wyoming College.  I live on campus and work as a Resident Assistant so if you live on campus you may see me around.

I am a dual major student, trying to finish up my secondary education degree along with Television broadcasting. I have been averaging at least 20 credits a semester!  The professors are great and the classes are small. Potentially getting an A is pretty easy with the class size, peer help and opportunities for one on with with the instructors!  However I would advise not taking more than 25 or you will find yourself in the grasp of homework's clutches.

I am a Quality Leader as well so I might be giving you a tour if your thinking about coming here. As Quality Leaders it is our job to give tours, do community service and inform others about the many things offered here at CWC. I really have enjoyed this place. It is easy to make friends and there are several little things that you can do to keep busy and have fun. If you are feeling lonely look me up, get in touch with the activities on campus, stay out of room as much as possible and find yourself here at CWC!

For students considering CWC, if you not sure if you want to attend, here are some things to think about:

  • CWC is fairly inexpensive
  • Financial Aid is available—it’s not like money is laying on the floor in some treasure chest but the opportunity to find it is there.
  • The school and campus is small and its easy to get to know everyone.

I’m not trying to smash CWC down your throat, but its one way of finding yourself and what you really want to do when you move on in your life, and why not do that for low cost!  I hope you decide to attend CWC this fall.

News Broadcasting major loves her program of study

I have never felt more at home than with the Television/Radio News Broadcasting department.
I am from Washington and it’s hard to be away from home. You leave behind your family, friends, and all of the other people that have surrounded you for eighteen years, and then are put into a new setting by yourself.
At first, it was really difficult to accept the fact that I couldn’t take a weekend trip to see my friends at college. They would talk about how they got to see each other every weekend, and it frustrated me that I couldn’t be there with them to join in on the fun back home!
What made the transformation easiest for me from high school life back in Washington to living on my own at college in Wyoming were the people in the News Broadcasting Department.  I am majoring in Television News Broadcasting, and that was the best decision I have ever made. The classes are challenging because the instructors know and love their programs so much.  They are always willing to take the time out of their day and explain things thoroughly.  You don’t just sit and listen to lectures all day, you actually go out and experience hands on learning.
Everyone- staff and students- are so friendly and caring. They are easy to get along with, and they are always there to help. Without those kinds of people, big changes are difficult, and I truly appreciate that they helped me transition so smoothly.
The News Broadcasting Department isn’t the only area at Central Wyoming College that is like that, the whole campus appears to be that way. I am truly grateful to be a part of such a great school!
