Civitas at Central

Here is the coming week’s Civitas at Central, Civil Thoughts of the Day – work to incorporate them into your life!

#15 - Respect Other People’s Space – Leave enough room between yourself and others so that they won’t feel uncomfortable or intimidated.  The fervor of your convictions give you no license to sermonize in another’s face.  Standing at an appropriate distance from others is part of poise, which gives strength and authority to your words.
  • “Come not near the books or writings of another so as to read them unless desired; also look not nigh when another is writing a letter”  – George Washington

#16 - Apologize Earnestly – As we become more aware of the needs of others and more willing to honor them, we find ourselves apologizing less frequently.  That’s because we prevent mistakes from happening rather than manage them after they have occurred.  Perfection not being of this world, however, apologies remain one of the most valuable resources of the fair and the considerate.
  •  “Most apologies are gestures of empathy; they express regret for offending someone else’s feelings or concerns.  Apologizing implies that you are aware of the feelings of another and can empathize sufficiently to regret having injured that person.” Daniel Jankelovich

These two “Rules of Considerate Conduct” are taken from P.M. Forni’s book, Choosing Civility – The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct.  If you are interested in reading more, stop by Lance’s office to check out a copy!

Stop by the Classroom Wing between CW129 and CW132 to see the Civitas at Central Board to read these Thoughts of the Day!

Global journalist speaks at CWC on fate of African mountain gorilla

Mark Jenkins, a critically-acclaimed author and staff writer for National Geographic originally from Laramie, speaks at Central Wyoming College on the fate of Africa’s mountain gorilla Friday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.
Jenkins’ presentation on the CWC campus is the first of an International Studies Scholar Lecture series and will be held in the Little Theatre, located in the CWC Student Center.

Jenkins, a writer-in-residence at the University of Wyoming, will take the CWC audience into the world of the mountain gorilla, one of the most endangered species on earth. Through award-winning photography, Jenkins unveils a dangerous journey into Virunga National Park, in eastern Congo, to determine who has been killing the mountain gorillas.  His story, which first appeared in National Geographic, won the 2009 National Magazine Award for photojournalism and will soon be made into a BBC documentary starring Natalie Portman.

A global journalist, Jenkins covers the world writing about geopolitical issues, from landmines in Cambodia to HIV/AIDS in Botswana, ethnic cleansing in Burma to mountaineering in Pakistan. In the process of his expedition into the eastern Congo, Jenkins learned how “all of us are in fact intimately connected” to the mountain gorillas.

The author of four books, Jenkins works have been widely praised and translated. Jenkins has been published in more than 50 national and international magazines and newspapers, including The Atlantic Monthly, Bicycling, Backpacker, Conde Naste Traveler, GQ, Outside, Playboy, Sierra, Sports Afield, the Utne Reader and The Washington Post. He has been interviewed by Anderson Cooper 360, Good Morning America, The Crier Report, CNN, PBS, BBC and NPR. He has been a guest on a host of radio programs.

For the past six years, Jenkins’ column, The Hard Way, has explored the meaning and joy of the physical, outdoor life. From clandestine journeys across Tibet to mountaineering in Bolivia, sea kayaking around Turkey’s Gallipoli peninsula to canyoneering in Australia, Jenkins covers the globe in search of adventure, history and human understanding.

His visit to the CWC campus is a result of a grant awarded to the University of Wyoming and CWC to grow international studies programs at UW and at the state’s community colleges

Meet Amara

Today was busy, but it was great. We are in the middle of organized chaos for Fiddler on the Roof. We are getting all of the props together, painting the stage with steady hands and tired minds. Yet, we are still so far away. We are finally doing full run-thrus which is wonderful! It's finally coming together! WOOT WOO!!!

As far as my classes go, I am really enjoying them. Philosophy is my favorite class I have this semester. In the class, there are close to 45 students and all of us have different ways of looking at the ideas in front of us. The class blows my mind and I enjoy the challenge. It's a total blast. Did you know that our western ideas stemmed from Socrates, Plato, and Neoplatinism? Of course those aren't the only ones, I'm sure, but I had no idea. Look it up if your interested.

Central Wyoming College accounting and income tax students provide free help preparing 2009 taxes to taxpayers that cannot afford professional assistance on the CWC campus Tuesdays from Feb.16 through March 30.

The students of Accounting Instructor Kristen Ressler are providing the help from 5-7 p.m. in room 103 of CWC’s Classroom Wing on Tuesday evenings Feb. 16, 23, March 2, 9, 23, and 30.The service will also be provided in Lander on Friday, Feb. 19 and Feb. 26 from 5-7 p.m. at the CWC Lander Center, 427 Main Street.

In cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, CWC is one of the many Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites around the country. VITA volunteers assist low income, elderly, disabled, and non-English speaking taxpayers with their tax returns.

Taxpayers needing assistance should bring their 2009 tax package, all wage and earning statements (Form W-2), all interest statements (Form 1099), information for all deductions/credits, proof of account for direct deposit or refund (voided check), Social Security cards for dependents and/or spouse, birth date of all dependents and any other relevant information about income and expenses. It is also helpful to bring their 2008 tax return.

The students will prepare Forms 1040EZ, 1040A (with schedule 1, 2, 3 and EIC), 1040 (with schedule A, B, EIC and R), 1040-ES, 2441 (child and dependent care credit), 8863 (education credits) and 8812 (additional child tax credits).

In addition to preparing individual returns, the volunteers will run a class to show participants how to E-file returns using tax software.

Meet Britnea

I have been a student here at Central Wyoming College now for a year and a half. I am currently beginning my second semester of the nursing program here. It is a four semester program, and I look forward to completing it. It is very hard to get back into things following the Christmas break that was a month long; however, learning must go on. Currently, we are learning to start IV’s on our patients. In a week, the instructors will have us do a live check off on this skill with a partner. In other words, I am expected to start an IV for the first time on my poor friend. I do however; feel l confident enough that I will not hurt her. This for me is very scary, but, giving shots for the first time last semester was just as scary; so I know I will make it through it.
In two weeks we are to start clinical and this is when I will be putting my skills into action. The instructors are very knowledgeable and very helpful here. I feel very confident that they are teaching me everything I need to know to take proper care of my patients. This is exactly why I knew that CWC was the right choice for me. All of my instructors are very dedicated to our learning and being successful.

Civil Thoughts of the Day

Here is the coming week’s Civitas at Central, Civil Thoughts of the Day – work to incorporate them into your life!

#13 – Keep it Down (and Rediscover Silence) – Noise is among the most pervasive and frustrating sources of everyday annoyance – and sometimes a veritable pain.  Silence is not necessarily the sign of a failure to communicate.  Instead, it can be the refreshing result of a choice.  Consider cell phones and personal music devices – turn them off when in class, or at least turn them to vibrate or down to a point where they can only be heard by you.

•    “My right to swing my fist ends at your nose.  My right to make noise ought to end at your ear.”  Les Blomberg
•    “Let us be silent – so we may hear the whisper of the gods.”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

#14 – Respect Other People’s Time – We respect other people’s time when we learn to value it as much as our own.  Even better, we can get to a point where we won’t distinguish between our time and the time of others.  We then respect time as such – as the precious commodity it is – and act upon this respect in every situation.  Punctuality is non-negotiable – arriving on time is a basic rule of considerate behavior!

•    “Dost thou love life?  Then do not squander time, for that’s the stuff life is made of.”  Benjamin Franklin

These two “Rules of Considerate Conduct” are taken from P.M. Forni’s book, Choosing Civility – The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct.  If you are interested in reading more, stop by Lance’s office to check out a copy!

It's Groundhog Day

According to news sources this morning Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his home in western Pennsylvania to see his shadow, which means winter will last another six weeks.

I don't know about you but the cold is getting to me! It will be nice to see students lounging in the warm afternoon sun around campus instead of trudging through the cold and snow.

Meet Christina

Hello Readers! My name is Christina and I am currently residing on the Central Wyoming College campus and I would like to share with you some of the activities and clubs I enjoy taking part in.

First off, I am majoring in math and engineering and have a minor in music. I am going to school completely off of scholarships right now. One of these scholarships is called the CWC Foundation Quality Leader scholarship. Being involved in this prestigious group allows me to meet new people, help the community and be involved in many activities that happen on campus.

I have met many new friends and mentors here and I have to say everyone I have met is incredibly nice.  It’s also great to live on campus because it gives me a chance to chill with friends and have a movie or game night when I'm looking for something to do. It has been really fun for me to meet and hangout with such a diverse group of people. From my crazy Serbian basketball friends to the friends I’ve met from back East and my local buds, there is always something to do that is fun and exciting here at CWC.
