CWC students prepare taxes for low income, elderly

Central Wyoming College accounting and income tax students provide free help preparing 2009 taxes to taxpayers that cannot afford professional assistance on the CWC campus Tuesdays from Feb.16 through March 30.

The students of Accounting Instructor Kristen Ressler are providing the help from 5-7 p.m. in room 103 of CWC’s Classroom Wing on Tuesday evenings Feb. 16, 23, March 2, 9, 23, and 30.The service will also be provided in Lander on Friday, Feb. 19 and Feb. 26 from 5-7 p.m. at the CWC Lander Center, 427 Main Street.

In cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, CWC is one of the many Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites around the country. VITA volunteers assist low income, elderly, disabled, and non-English speaking taxpayers with their tax returns.

Taxpayers needing assistance should bring their 2009 tax package, all wage and earning statements (Form W-2), all interest statements (Form 1099), information for all deductions/credits, proof of account for direct deposit or refund (voided check), Social Security cards for dependents and/or spouse, birth date of all dependents and any other relevant information about income and expenses. It is also helpful to bring their 2008 tax return.

The students will prepare Forms 1040EZ, 1040A (with schedule 1, 2, 3 and EIC), 1040 (with schedule A, B, EIC and R), 1040-ES, 2441 (child and dependent care credit), 8863 (education credits) and 8812 (additional child tax credits).

In addition to preparing individual returns, the volunteers will run a class to show participants how to E-file returns using tax software.
