Student Senate, Chloe Skaggs “Words of Welcome” during Convocation Sept 9, 2010

On behalf of Central Wyoming College Student Senate I would like to welcome you as fellow students and friends. To quote Spanish artist Salvador Dali, “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.” I believe that pursuing higher education is a choice; a choice we are celebrating today. By attending Central Wyoming College we have all displayed ambitions of attaining more knowledge and gaining life experience. Choosing this path of greater knowledge and understanding you are now able to decide what you want from your education. Getting to know faculty and staff at Central Wyoming College is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Your professors can serve as a lifeline when struggling with homework or coping with other non-related issues. Be sure to take advantage of small class sizes at C.W.C. by speaking up and asking questions; things not always easy at a larger college or university. It is sometimes easy to forget why you are here, why you go to classes day after day, but remember xit’s because you want to be here – because you have chosen to be here. Don’t cut yourself short by skipping classes or not doing your homework, those things are a privilege and should be seen as such.

If I could say this a million times in the next two minutes I would, get involved with campus activities! Being involved with activities on campus will open so many doors for you. Discover new interests, like white water rafting, say…this Saturday? You can sign up in the Activities office. Run for Student Senate and be a voice for others, you can pick up an application at the Information fair immediately following this ceremony. Go to Wednesday Night Movie Night and meet new, lifelong friends. Or how about the Howdy Dance tonight at 8? You may just meet the love of your life! Ok, or you might just have a good time. What I’m ultimately trying to say is that there’s a little bit of something for everyone when it comes to campus activities. Activities are just one more way to find yourself at Central Wyoming College.

This year at C.W.C. we all have a very special opportunity. We have the chance to create change on campus; I like to think of it as writing history.

As many of you may or may not know, Central Wyoming College is going to the polls this November. We are asking Fremont County if now is the time to build what will be the newest addition to Central Wyoming College campus. I am speaking of the Health and Science Center. You may be sitting in your seats asking yourselves, “What does this building have to do with me?” The answer, “Everything!” Central Wyoming College wants to build this structure in order to accommodate more students in required general science labs, more nurses in to our incredibly well known and highly regarded nursing program. I would personally like to ask you for your vote for the bond this November that will change Central Wyoming College in a very big, very positive way. Not a registered voter, don’t sweat it! You can register to vote at the information fair. You can also show your support for the Health and Scicence Center by joining our student group on Facebook.

I honestly believe that this year has the potential to be the best year of your life. Run with it! Get involved, get active, and go to class. Attending Central Wyoming College is an opportunity for you to discover yourself and unlock your potential. Please join us for the rest of the days’ activities, free food and lots of amazing games. Let’s have fun…today and every other day.
