Ever heard of Bongo Ball?

Well it’s my last blog entry of the semester and I have had a busy couple of weeks. As classes wind down to a close it seems like I have gotten caught up in studying for finals like everyone else, however I have still had time for some fun as well. The basketball teams have looked great so far. Of course I like a close game, but 50 point blowouts are always fun to cheer for as well. I look forward to the rest of the season. Tutoring for the middle school has also continued to go well, as I have now got to know some of the kids pretty well. I found out it’s extremely gratifying when a student comes back the next day with a good grade on a subject you tutored them in.

I also am looking forward to the telethon the Quality Leaders are hosting that will be on PBS. I haven’t actually been to one, but I have heard only good things about it, and of course a good cause will be helped. I also played a game early this month called bongo ball. Probably one of the best games ever invented. Apparently, bongo ball is where you get nurf footballs, and fire them at your friends with high powered CO2 rifles. Oh, and there are inflatable obstacles all across the gym laid out to hide behind. My crowning achievement was to win a three on three match against one of the instructors teams… even if the other instructor was on mine.

Lastly, I’m super stoked for Christmas! Besides the obvious fact that everyone loves the holidays, I’m making a special trip to go snowboarding with a friend that has been living it up in California. I’m looking forward to showing him that cold can’t be all bad. So be jolly everyone, and happy holidays!

Quality Leader also a CWC rodeo team member

Hi!  It’s Danni Jo Hinman and I am a member of the Central Wyoming College rodeo team. Come check us out at practice every Monday-Thursday at 6pm at the CWC Equine Center.  This fall, we had five rodeos and we will participate in 5 more in the spring.  During the spring rodeo season, we will travel to Casper, Gillette, Laramie, Torrington and Ft. Collins CO. Both the men and women's rodeo teams are sitting well in points and we hope to live up to the standards set last year with the women's team finishing number one in the region and second at the national finals!

Student Success Center is there for you

Writing a blog is always a good process. It’s sort of a self disclosure, a relief after which I feel better. This blog I’m planning to devote to my experience of Fall 2012. This semester I became a teacher assistant (tutor), at Student Success Center also known as Trio. Student Success Center is a CWC organization which offers students a various types of opportunities. Trio fulfills almost all needs of every student. It provides laptops, books, calculators, advising - transferring services, counseling and also provides an accommodation to students with special needs. The staff at Trio is specially helpful, friendly and all of them have a dedication to help students, to provide the best opportunity to succeed in classes. At Trio, the staff has a dedication to provide the learning environment, they are also interested in setting up interest groups and in preparing needed materials and supplies. Every faculty member is there for you to help you to improve your good habits and academic performance, to mentor students and to provide successful learning methods.

The most important thing at Trio is that students get a chance to study with peer-tutors who have taken your class and got an A grade. They are your best source. They know how you are feeling about the class, because they have been in your shoes just a semester before, and they know the best methods and tactics that work to be successful in those classes. I have improved academic skills last semester when I used to come as a student. Now I’m there as a tutor, and help them with the best I can, so they can do better.

I highly encourage every students to join Student Success Center and to become a Trio Student. It helped me, it helped my other friends, and I’m sure it will help you.

Looking forward to new classes

I hope everybody had a great holiday season. I know I am. It was good to see my family and compete with others at Black Friday.

College life is still treating me well. I’m excited that the semester is wrapping up so that I can move on to other classes and see if I can peak my interests in other ways. I plan to test myself even more during the spring semester than I have so far.

As fall semester wraps up, I have come to realize that even though CWC is a small campus, it is one that I really enjoy. I believe that the smaller classes, smaller campus, and having teachers that can actually remember your name has created a wonderful atmosphere to be involved with. Generally speaking, I haven’t cared to be part of school activities. This has changed significantly since I have been a Rustler. I have gone to many basketball games and plays now, not to mention the countless other activities I have attended. I am excited to continue having these experiences during the spring semester of 2013.

It is safe to say that CWC has me looking at the future in a serious manner for the first time. While it is nerve racking to think about, my experience at Central Wyoming College has me excited about what the world has in store for me and how I can find my place within it. On that note, I should go!

Checking in…

Hey everyone, it's Johnny again. I just wanted to let you know how my first semester is going at Central Wyoming College. So far, my first semester has been going well! I have been involved in many of the school activities, including basketball and volleyball games, sports broadcasting, student senate, Quality Leader, the Halloween dance, and many other fun activities as well. I am in the traveling Jazz Choir for CWC, and we recently traveled to various areas of Utah singing for 5 different high schools, not only to perform, but also to recruit potential members of next years choir at Central. I have made SO many new friends around the school, an I have continued to be good friends with some of my high school buddies. Though I am CONSTANTLY busy between all these activities, studying, and my job at TCi, I am having an absolute wonderful time.

Holidays and basketball

Time for the holidays and, of course, college basketball!

This time of year is always fun! Not only by CWC students and staff but for our community as well. Our student section has been great and I hope we can get a lot more students involved! I have attended almost all of the games this season and they have done a phenomenal job.

Games are a big part of college life and one of the most fun! The more people the better, so I hope more people will come and support our men and lady Rustlers. There are games this weekend and I hope to see a lot of faces there!

CWC plays at home tonight at 5:30/7:30 and tomorrow at 3:00/5:00.

Both teams play at home again on Tuesday, November 20 at 5:30/7:30.

Love watching basketball? Well come watch the Rustler men’s basketball team dominate this weekend at home both Friday and Saturday at 5.30 in the Bailey Tire tip off! The boys are undefeated so far this season after their win last week to Lamar. We have an awesome team this year and they are great to watch and work with. I am their student athletic trainer so I get the privilege of going to ever single game this season.

So come join us and cheer the boys on!

A balancing act for Drew

Hey everybody! This is Drew Leach again, and I hope you are all doing well in your own lives. As for me, I can actually say I am doing really wonderful. It seems like everything is finally coming together in my life. So far in school, I am busier than ever studying and keeping up on my homework. Actually, just today I scheduled my classes for the spring 2013 semester at CWC. I am still continuing on my Pre-Health degree, and should have it about finished up after the spring semester. My advisor and I scheduled me for 18 credits, which will definitely be another tough workload. In the end of it all, however, I am excited to know that I worked so hard for my degree.

Just recently, I was asked by the head wrestling coach for Riverton Middle School to be an assistant coach for him this season. This is quite exciting for me, because the coach that asked me was my first wrestling coach when I was in 7th grade. He wants me to help him teach the techniques and work ethic that Riverton High School bases their team off of, as I was a part of the varsity high school team in high school. Even though I am a first year college student straight from high school, I feel pretty good that a coach wants me to work with him and help to make his team one of the best middle school teams in the state.

As you can tell, my life will continue to become more and more busy. Balancing my schoolwork with coaching, INBRE, and other pleasure activities such as hunting and spending time with my family, I don’t have much free time any more. Even though this sounds like too much to a lot of people, I wouldn’t want it any other way. Thanks again for reading my blog posts, and I hope you are enjoying life as much as I am!

TRIO program

Well it’s almost Thanksgiving break and I cannot wait! School has been stressful due to tests that come out this time of year and all the homework teachers cram on you to make sure they get everything covered by the end of the semester. It will be nice to finally have a couple days off from school and relax.

However, what I wanted to share with you guys is information about the TRIO program. Trio is a program that helps students have the same opportunities as everyone else to succeed in school. To become part of Trio you must either be a first generation college student, qualify for a pell grant, or have a disability either physical or learning. Trio provides tutors to help you with any class you need help in which comes in handy when you have three papers due and haven’t started on any. They also provide books for your classes at the beginning of each semester which is nice because you don’t have to pay for them and they get very pricey. Trio has a computer lab which students can use all day at their own convenience as well as counselors to help out with any problem that might occur. Trio has helped me out a lot this semester because it was my first time being in college and I didn’t really know how to go about anything. The people who work for Trio all do their best to help students as much as possible. I am even going to visit with one of the Trio counselors this week to register for classes this spring. It is nice to have a place to go where people are friendly and willing to help. So, keep in mind that anyone can apply for Trio and it has greatly improved my college life so far.

Education Matters

Hey guys I’m back! I would just like to take a little time to talk about education. I am majoring in Elementary Education and possibly speech therapy. I am super excited to become a teacher because I believe that educating children about the right things when they are young will help them become great adults with integrity and knowledge. I also would like to point out that to teach and be an educator I must first gain an education myself. Although school seems boring and nobody likes going to school, it really does prepare you for the future and helps you to be more successful in your life. Going to college allows you to take classes that are interesting to you as well as classes that pertain to your major. It makes going to school more fun and getting an education more enjoyable because you are doing the things you want and like to do. So go to college, get an education, and most importantly, have fun!

Find that someone

When people are forced to take classes outside of their preferred subjects, like math, they tend to get a little irritated. Stop those feelings of anxiety and depression right now! I am here to tell you that there is someone on campus for everyone. Now, I am not talking romantically, although I am sure that you can find someone if you search hard enough, I am speaking in terms of a professor that you can learn from. For me, I have found great professors for math, science, and general studies. Mike Bostick happens to be a math wizard and a genius if you ever find yourself needing help--he is your man. Steve McAllister, Tara Womack-Shultz, Bill Finney, pretty much the entire science department, can answer any question you may throw at them. (McAllister: Biology, Shultz: Anatomy, Finney: Chemistry) General studies professors are degree specific professors, however; I utilized their classrooms for general credits. Jeff Hosking makes class fun with contemporary historic events and witty debates while everyone raves about Jewel Dirks and her ever fun classes. Before I began college, I thought that my brain would never find its counterpart in another like it had in high school and then it happened. One sunny day I looked up into the skyscraper that is Steven J. McAllister and thought “yes, I can work with this.” So boys and girls don’t give up on finding that special someone who can guide you through the intellectual realms of college just broaden your horizons and embrace those who offer their services.

Central Wyoming College is a Family

It’s nice to be able to be one thousand miles away from home, and still feel as if you are at home. In most colleges and universities, it’s hard for people to get into the groove of things. It’s a different story here at Central Wyoming College.

When I came here last year from Omak, Washington, I was nervous AND excited. There were so many new situations to experience, yet, I was nervous that things wouldn’t work out as planned. What if I had a hard time making new friends? What if I couldn’t keep up with my school work and rodeo? These were questions that arose, but just as quickly as they arose, they vanished.

I made so many new friends here in all different areas. I had rodeo friends, broadcasting friends, and housing friends. Each friend from each group had their own special talent. . . Friends that would comfort me when I needed comforted, friends that inspired me when I needed, and friends that boosted my happiness when I needed it.

Not only are all of the students at CWC friendly, but the instructors are all very easy to get along with. Whenever I had a problem in my class, they were more than willing to help me catch up and they were available most of the time for extra help. I have lots of friends from back home that complain about there not being enough one on one time with their instructors, so they don’t feel as successful. Instructors at Central Wyoming College are good at what they do and they truly care about their student’s success. It’s awesome to be a part of a college where all of the instructors care about each student’s improvement!

Big universities and other colleges have NOTHING on CWC… We’re more of a family than a bunch of kids spending thousands of dollars on an education where people don’t give us the time of day. We’re treated like we are somebody, not nobody. It’s an amazing feeling to come to a college and truly feel accepted. You’re treated like an adult, but you are never on your own. Central Wyoming College is the best place to start off the rest of your life, I wouldn’t have changed colleges for anything!

Life is Good!

College is busy and stressful and sometimes we can get hung up on the negatives…

I was thinking about what to write for my blog entry this month and it occurred to me that I have so many things I could write about. I got to thinking about all the good things in my life. Somehow I have managed to surround myself with some pretty great people. I have fantastic professors who care about me, a family who would do anything for me, friends to have fun with and of course my horse who is always a great listener.

I want to encourage you to look at your life and think about the things that are good. College is busy and stressful and sometimes we can get hung up on the negatives but when you stop and think I’m sure you can find something or someone in your life that makes your world great! Well those are my thoughts about life right now.

I hope everyone can find something in their life to make them smile!

Semester half over

We are now officially half way into the semester and classes are starting to become extremely demanding!  Midterms was a very stressful week also.  The tutoring center was overflowing with students getting in extra study time.
Already there are tons of volleyball and basketball games.  The thing I love about CWC is the school spirit and how even the different sports participants will come cheer on other sports such as rodeo.
Its a lot of fun going to games and events such as the dance with new friends!

Be careful while traveling

The holiday season is approaching.  I know many students will be heading home for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Be cautious while traveling…

There has been information circulating that a new scam is hitting hotel/motel guests.  The scam involves a person who calls the hotel/motel room’s phone and says they’re from the front desk. The caller tells the person in the room that the hotel’s computer is down and they need all of the individual’s information again. If the victim says they’ll go to the lobby, the caller will say the lobby is full of people. It has been reported the scam has been successful in stealing people’s credit card information.

Never give out personal information over the phone.  If this happens to you, go straight to the front desk to report the call.

Gard is looking forward to CWC Basketball season

Hey ya’ll its Gard again. It’s been a while since the last post but I’m back and ready for some more blogging. CWC has vamped up since my last post, and I’ve started taking some tests and writing essays to go along with the activities around campus. Speaking of campus, there’s been a lot going on lately; the Trail of Terror was awesomely scary and I hope everyone got a chance to attend. I might start making trials a Halloween tradition instead of haunted houses! I also got a chance to usher the Odd Couple, but I was disappointed I didn’t get a chance to see it! However, the people going in for a second viewing told me the play was pretty amazing.
I’ve also been tutoring some middle schoolers after school lately, and I have to say I’m pretty dang impressed. I saw a little man’s drawing today and he informed me it was a Dolorian with built-in flux capacitor; Back to the Future was his favorite movie! This along with finding out he knew what three to the fourth power was off the top of his head made for a good day of tutoring. My math wizard today was the most recent in a long line of cool kids I’ve met tutoring, and needless to say, I’m really starting to enjoy it.
Of course, its Halloween tomorrow, and I am looking forward to the costumes in Mr. David Gray’s class, since their not only allowed, but encouraged. To be honest though, I’m doing a little bit of looking past the holiday because I’m really excited to see the season opener for the basketball teams. A little NBA tonight got me excited, and I can’t wait to see Central on the hardwood.
All in all, it’s been a good last few weeks here at Central, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year in the classroom and out!

Workloads

Hey everyone! Classes here at CWC have definitely taken off, and full workloads are bearing their weight on all the students at Central. Taking so many credits I’m finding my times of fun are flying right out the window, right alongside the warm weather.

CWC is everything I could ask for in a college and is allowing me to prepare to attend a university next fall. I feel very pleased that I made the choice to stick around my hometown and attend my first year at Central. I get to see my family every weekend and continue working as I did in high school. Also, I have been able to take many classes and find the ones that appeal to me in preparation for choosing a career. Double-majoring in math and psychology, (weird combo right?) I have made up my mind that I will continue studies in both as I transfer, with the wonderful help of Paula Hartbank, to a four-year school. I plan to either teach mathematics at the college level, obtaining an eventual PhD in math, or become a behavioral specialist, with a PhD in psychology and a minor in behaviors. CWC has definitely sparked and ignited my interests in these areas and helped me prove to myself that college is my thing and how important education is!

Work and play

Man what a few crazy weeks this has been! Classes are heating up faster than I would have imagined. Workloads are increasing and time spent doing leisurely activities is diminishing due to the amount of homework I am receiving. That being said, I love my classes. I came into college not knowing for sure what I really wanted to do, but now that I have spent an adequate amount of time in my anatomy and physiology classes, I know for certain that I want to join the medical field in some form! That’s a big step up from not knowing whether I wanted a job in a technological, human relations, or medical field. By far my favorite class is anatomy. I have found out that I love knowing the parts of the human body. It fascinates me in ways I didn’t imagine it doing! The way I have taken to my classes and am able to handle the work load is a testament to the fact that if you do something you really enjoy then you will have no problem being successful.

While my work load the past few weeks has been rather large, I have also found time to get out and enjoy activities both on campus and in the community. This past weekend, I enjoyed the college’s new play, “The Odd Couple.” It was a job well done and I feel sorry for anybody that missed out. Never have I been to a play that CWC has put on and been disappointed.

I took my girlfriend and my cousin to this year’s edition of the corn maze (about 4 miles outside of Riverton.) I would like to take this opportunity to gloat:  This is the first time I have made it through the entire maze without cheating in some form!  It was a blast.  Anybody that reads this during the month of October should certainly take the chance to go visit the maze.

Well that’s pretty much all I have to say for now. I hope you are having as good of an experience as I am having at CWC. Happy Halloween!

Teaching history is this Quality Leader’s goal

Hey y’all, my name is Danen Thornley.  I was born and raised in Riverton, Wyoming and I LOVE my hometown.  I live on a farm/ranch with my dad, mom, and sister just outside of Riverton where I have horses and pasture Texas Longhorns. Guess you could say I was born a cowgirl because I have many outdoor chores such as riding my horses, irrigating, picking up hay, and feeding all the animals. Even though I have lived in Riverton, I come from a very large Italian family. We love to get together, play games, eat, celebrate, and did I mention eat?

I have a dream of becoming a history teacher.  During my high school years I took many dual credit courses and completed many online classes through Central Wyoming College to further my education.  Sports were a huge part of my life in high school.  I played basketball, volleyball, and ran track.  Tragically, I had to have two reconstructive knee surgeries my junior and senior year, which left me unable compete in sports anymore.  This made me more bound and determined to reach a higher education to become a teacher.

Central Wyoming College was my first pick because of the location; this meant that I could have the best of both worlds (life on the farm and still a great educational opportunity).  This spring I interviewed for the Quality Leader Program and learned that I was chosen to participate in the program.  I have found that it is worth it because I have acquired leadership skills and met many people here at Central.  Also the great thing about Central Wyoming College is it is very small (in a good way). You have the opportunity to meet more people to help you study, learn new knowledge, and even make new friends.

I’m majoring in Secondary Education and Western American Studies.  Through my involvement in the Anthropology Program, I have met some awesome people and have been able to go out in the field and do some excavations.  This is exciting and I encourage anyone going into Archeology or Anthropology to get in touch with Todd Guenther.  He will lead you to great places!

Since, I live at home with my parents, I try to take advantage of the home cooked meals and FREE living, yey! Everyone should be able to enjoy that, I thank my parents so much for it. I look forward to the many other opportunities that arise here at Central Wyoming College because college is support to be a learning and educational experience right? I wish everyone good luck this year in their studies and I hope everyone takes every opportunity that arises at Central.

Halloween Trail of Terror

With October being the season of horrors and hobgoblins, Central Wyoming College invites those who dare to walk the Halloween Trail of Terror Oct. 26 and 27.
Sponsored by the CWC Theater Department and Student Activities, guided tours of outdoor campus haunts are provided by theater students Rustin Burr and Zedikiah Mills from 7-10 p.m. on both evenings.
The tours, which last about 10 minutes, are free though donations will be accepted and forwarded to the Tough Enough Cancer Fund in honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To take the frightful journey, meet the guides in the northwest corner of the CWC Arts Center parking lot.
CWC theater students are creating horrific hideaways and thrills for all ages, and Student Activities provide refreshments. “There will definitely be scary creatures and scary moments,” Theater Director Mike Myers said, while promising it shouldn’t be so intense as to traumatize young children.
Students in Myers’ directing class are responsible for developing the fright venues, selecting costumes and turning campus grounds into the fright destination of Fremont County. CWC Quality Leaders and members of the Outdoor Adventure Club are also assisting on the Trail of Terror.
“The theater department is the perfect entity for Halloween,” said Myers who has always wanted to create a haunted house. “We have the skills to do it, but don’t have the time because we are always putting on plays.”

Pre-Health Major

Hey everybody! My name is Drew Leach, and I have been born and raised in the good ol’ town of Riverton. My mother’s family has lived around Wyoming for most of their lives, mainly originating from the tiny town in the Big Horn Mountains called Hyattville. Although living here for quite a while, my father is actually from Arizona, where his entire family lives. Coming from different parts of the country, it has been really fun to learn about the different cultures from where my family comes from.

I attended Riverton High School, which was a very great experience for me. I played three sports of all four years of high school, being football, wrestling and track. I was also involved with different clubs and programs at the school like the leadership program, National Honors Society, CAN and Yearbook.. When I heard about the Quality Leader Program at CWC, I was really excited to join and get to meet some more great people.

I chose to attend Central Wyoming College because I have always lived around here, which let me really weigh the benefits of staying home for college. I want to be an Orthopedic Surgeon when I am done with school, with CWC being a great place for me to get my feet wet in college. Currently I am studying Pre-Health, and it has been a blast so far. After CWC I plan on attending the University of Wyoming to continue on my goal of a surgeon. After UW, I will most likely attend the University of Washington Medical School. Even though my plans include attending school for 12 or more years, I am excited to embark on this journey.

On the social aspect of college, I have been pretty busy as well. I have been hanging out with my friends a lot, and we have been attending a lot of school events. We have been joining the rowdy student section at each home volleyball game. The team has been doing work so far, and I fear for the health of the opponents when our girls spike the balls in their faces. As always, I have heard the rodeo team has been doing well, even though I haven’t been able to attend any home rodeos. It is pretty cool thinking that I go to school with a bunch of stellar athletes making their ways into the national ranks. Even though I am not involved with the sports, I will do my best to support them.

I believe that that pretty much sums up my life as of now. I have pretty much been busy doing my schoolwork and supporting my fellow classmates. So far, college has been pretty fun for me. I can’t wait to post again and update you all on what has been going on in my life. Until then, enjoy everybody else’s posts, and have a great semester.

Getting Involved…

Wow, I didn’t realize how fast school flies by! First semester is already half way over and it seems like I just started classes yesterday. Let me tell you though, college has been a very exciting experience so far that I wouldn’t want to miss out on. There are so many activities and clubs with people constantly promoting them that it is hard to resist them all. There are volleyball games, which everyone attends, as well as plays, dance sessions, movie nights, and so much more. At CWC it seems almost impossible to not be involved.

The best activity that I have been to this year was Oktoberfest which is one of CWC Foundations scholarship fundraising for the quality leader scholarship and many others.  There was a live and silent auction, dinner and dessert. It was fun to model the live auction prizes as well as bid on some of the silent auction items.

Being involved within the school has really helped me to create new and enriched relationships with people, while helping me to do better in the classes I am taking. You would never believe how much it helps to know some of the people in your classes. They can help you understand content, just be a study buddy, or become one of your friends that you talk to during class. When I first started college I didn’t think that I needed to meet any new people because I already have good friends and that I wouldn’t need help in class because I am very independent, however the reality is that you can never have too many friends. It’s also nice to have someone to help you in class because college level courses are difficult and very different that high school classes.

Although college seems tough it is a good idea to be involved and make it easier on yourself. College has been one of the best experiences I have had in my life so far and I wouldn’t change my choice to attend college if I had to make that decision again.

Coffee & Pool, come join us!

Hey everybody! My name is Danni Jo Hinman and I am a sophomore this year at Central Wyoming College. How about this cold weather that’s moving in on us so quickly?? Well, my favorite thing to do to get over the chills is to enjoy a delicious cup coffee from the The Grind (located in the cafeteria!) I love hanging out in the cafeteria with all of the professors and students.  I even play a game of pool every now and then; so if you some free time, come join us.

So Much Involvement!!

Hey everyone. This is my first blog post so I’ll do my best to impress you all! I am Kaylie Randall and this is my first year being a CWC student. I must say it is pretty awesome. Being a quality leader is amazing and has given me an opportunity to be involved at school but in the community, which is great. I never knew how much there was going on at campus and in the community. I guess our town is just full of parties and exciting events (that is if you are old enough…).

This past weekend I helped out with the Women in Science program that took place on campus and it was so interesting! I led a group of kids to a break out session, got to help out and participate in the session, free lunch (because what college student doesn’t love free food), and watch a speech given by a member of the science posse. The session I went to was the fire safety station and they showed kids all of their fire gear and pictures of putting out huge wild fires as well as teaching them to record fire weather. So cool!

I also will be helping out at the Help for Heath Hospice Barn Bash this upcoming weekend. I’m not quite sure what all will be going on during the event, but I do know we will be serving dinner, there will be a wine tasting, plus live and silent auctions where all the proceeds will go to hospice and helping fight cancer. People from all over the county are coming and it is going to a great cause so I bet it will be lots of fun. I am always happy to help out at things like these!

So there are just a few things I have been involved in so far at Central and there are many more events and activities to come. Hope everyone is having a great fall!

Hey fellow CWC students,

My name is Kole Stewart. I am a freshman here at CWC that was born and raised here in Riverton. I am pursuing a degree in pre-engineering then transferring to the University of Wyoming to finish out my degree. I have really enjoyed the time I have spent at the college attending all sorts of activities. I’ve watched multiple volleyball games as well as the always exciting rodeo.

From the time I’ve spend here I’ve began to realize how nice it is to have the small classroom size at our college. The one on one contact has been nice to get the hard concepts really easily. Another big difference is the professors actually care about your success and will help you gain that success.

I am really looking forward for the upcoming Halloween activities because they are always filled will fun and lots of candy. It also means it is becoming really close to the start of basketball which I really enjoy. It is very nice to know you’re always going to get a show when you attend a CWC basketball game. Overall I enjoy CWC and look forward to my time here.

Volleyball trip a blast

Recently, I attended a Central Wyoming College volleyball game in Casper, Wyoming. It was very nice because CWC Student Life Department sponsored the trip so I didn't have to pay for gas or food!  We all had so much fun! Steve was the driver of our bus and was really sassy the whole time which was part of the fun.

The game was really intense!  We cheered loud and kept up with the Casper College fans even though there were more of them then there were of us. The trip home was the best part because all of us sang the whole way home.

It was great trip for us! Thanks CWC!

Having a blast so far…

This is my first ever blog entry, so I suppose I should start out by telling you a little about myself! The name is Tanner Evans, but I go by Gard on account of some odd family tradition from back in the day. I plan on majoring in Business Administration, but after that have no idea what my future will look like. I was born and raised in Riverton so ask me if you need to directions anywhere within the expansive three mile radius of town! I just came off of a summer job of painting houses all day, every day, not the most exciting summer stories ever… I literally watched paint dry to make some money, but it’s good since I’m full time at Central now. Finally, any challengers out there want to take me on in madden, well I’m always game!

So, I’ve done some pretty neat stuff lately on campus. After vocation for the NSO, (which was really good) I was invited to go zip-lining above the fields behind the college. Now, I’m really, really afraid of heights, so zip lining sounded a little terrifying to me. I managed to power through though, and it ended up being really fun! No worries either, I was completely safe at the bottom. (I know a lot of people were mostly concerned with my safety throughout that story.) I also went to participate in a little beach volleyball/fire pit action one late night after classes and had a blast. There was an added bonus of meeting some cool people that go to the college too.

I also made it to one of the volleyball games. It felt great to be part of a student section again riling up the other team with everyone. (Our apologies if any of the girls from Sheridan College want to fight us later.) It was also nice that the CWC team won so handily. A shout out to the volleyball team! Needless to say I will be going to support the Lady Rustlers again. Unfortunately, I haven’t made it to any of the Rodeos yet to support our home town cowboys and cowgirls but I’m hoping to soon!

I’ve been looking forward to Oktoberfest lately. I’m not at all sure what to expect but I’m happy to be doing something productive besides school work these days, so Thursday here I come. I can’t lie though, every time I hear October I think of Halloween! Definitely my second favorite holiday. Hopefully someone will host a costume party so I have an excuse to order a Halloween costume at age 19.

Well, that about sums everything up for my time so far. Everyone have an amazing life until my next post!

No Regrets

It’s always fun and exciting to write a blog and share with current events I have in my CWC life. This semester seemed to begin organized and planned, but unfortunately it didn’t. I finished my program requirements last semester, and was very close to graduate. Although, I could graduate at that time, but changing my major from International Studies to Corporate Finance made me to stay here at CWC for one more semester in order to complete some prerequisites before I move to four-year school. Frankly speaking, changing my major was not the only reason why I stayed here longer, there are other things that I took into account and made my decision. Firstly, I should be proud of being in a Quality Leader group, that gives a privilege of being part of Leadership group and achieve qualitative experience. On the other hand CWC offers so many chances to accommodate my needs not only inside the school but also outside.

There are some classes that students need in order to complete the program requirement and there are also classes that students need in everyday life. For example, I registered in my prerequisite classes but I also added one class that will be helpful in my everyday life - and I know, I will be using the skills I obtain in this class later in my life. For instance, I’m taking Windows 7 class and I’m really enjoying. It’s fun, relaxing, no pressure but at the same time I learn so much in this class. Even though, I have some computer skills (I hope I do), but there are still a lot of things to learn, and I surely can apply in my everyday life.

What I most like here at CWC, that staff is very helpful here. If they see that you have a potential to study, desire to accomplish something, they will help you with no doubt. For example, I’m planning to transfer to some universities such as: Georgetown University, University of Wisconsin etc., and some of faculty members heard about it and expressed their wish to support me and do everything they can to make that transfer possible and easier. I think it’s very generous and kind of faculty to be willing to do this.

So far, the time I have spent here has been very productive. I don’t regret the decision I made to come to CWC. I obtained much more, then I sacrificed. I think CWC gives a good preparation for students transferring to four-year school. I know, many students who transfer from CWC with good grades, still keep the same grade scale at other universities and become more successful. I hope you enjoyed and I hope it wasn’t too boring, I’m pleased to share my next blog with you.

Thank you for your time,

Packing again?

I feel as if for the past year all I have been doing is packing and unpacking. I finally feel like I am all settled into my apartment after moving from Mote Hall. I can’t seem to stay in one place for long and somehow I’m still pretty bad at packing plus I always tend to over pack. I know of quite a few things in my closet right now that I will probably never wear.

I have learned a few things about packing though. First, keep your stuff organized and get rid of things you don’t need. I always seem to be doing more cleaning than packing. Second, start packing BEFORE the day you want to leave. Last minute packing means you will forget something. When you take your time to pack it makes it easier to take inventory of what you have and what you need. It also makes it less stressful. Third, make sure all of the things you are planning on taking will fit in your vehicle. It is rather distressing when at the last minute you have to completely reorganize because everything will not fit. And last but not least, ask friends for help. Moving everything yourself is not fun! Have some buddies help you carry at least the heavy items.

Well those are my packing tips. Maybe after a few more moves, I will finally master packing.

The CWC Experience

Well, I’ve made it through the first four weeks of classes here at CWC, and though I was a bit nervous at first, I absolutely love it! I graduated from high school in May of this year with 41 credits through Central, took 14 more this summer, and have to say I was pretty well acquainted with the classes and “college life” at CWC. I am currently double-majoring in math and psychology, plan to graduate in the spring of 2013, and continue my education at a four-year school. My class load, due to my desired graduation date, is rather large but my instructors are all great and I love all the courses I am taking. Aside from schoolwork, I am a Quality Leader, a tutor in the Student Success Center, and work in the Activities Office. There is always something to do here at Central, and for students who do not want to take an extremely large amount of credits or work for the college, the events and activities that take place are numerous! Coming up October 2, 5, and 6, the Lady Rustler’s volleyball team is competing at home against Western Wyoming, LCCC, and Eastern Wyoming, respectively. Tuesday there is a tailgate party prior to the game in front of the Student Center, so come and support our team! Also coming up is the annual CWC Foundation’s Oktoberfest. This event is a scholarship drive for the college with silent and live auctions and will be held October 4 from 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Riverton. As you can see, Central Wyoming College has many activities and events for students to attend, while offering a variety of courses to interest students in and out of the classroom.

Exciting year ahead

A new school year has begun and classes have commenced! To be completely honest I was even nervous and scared to start the new school year but there was an underlying feeling of excitement of the unknown going into college for the first time. After the craziness of the first week, things started to settle down and come into routine with classes, homework and the awesome events going on. The rodeo season kicked off to a great start within the first few weeks of school and I know the team will do great this year--possibly even better than last year! I’m super excited to see what events and new friends this new school year will bring!

Brady kicks off this year’s Quality Leader posts

For the third year in the row, the Central Wyoming College Quality Leaders are scheduled to do guest posts on our CWC blog.  It’s an opportunity to hear first hand what life is like here @ Central.  Today’s guest post is QL member, Brady Beers, who is a first time student.

Hey there,

This is my first blog post of the year and honestly I’m a little late to the game because I just haven’t been able to think of anything to write about. I am a first year student at CWC and so far I love it. Any nerves or fears that I had about my classes have been washed away by how much I like my professors and love the content that I am learning about. I have never been in a class with as many people as my anatomy lecture, or one with as few people as my physiology lab, but it is really interesting to see how the number of people affects the dynamics of the learning environment. Luckily, even in a class as large as the anatomy lecture, it seems easy for my professor to focus on just one of us if that is necessary.

I am a pretty shy person, so the idea of stepping into a classroom where I knew nobody and making new friends seemed pretty daunting. It was pretty surprising when a whole group of people sat down next to me and immediately included me in their lab group. It was almost like I didn’t have a choice, but that was the best thing that could have happened. Since then I have gotten over my shyness a little bit and become a bit more social.

Even though I am in college now, I still spent a large chunk of my time with my family. We are big outdoors people, and recently we took a trip up Beaver Rim in search of antelope. We were hugely successful, coming back with all of our tags filled and a great day to go with it. My brother shot the biggest antelope that I had ever seen, and while mine wasn’t as large, I’m still proud of it.

College is going to be a great experience for me. My time at CWC is just getting started and I am excited for all of the new experiences I am going to have. By the time I am done here I plan to no longer be a shy, nervous student. I plan to be an outgoing and completely social person. With that in mind, I better head to class! See ya next time!

What is New Student Orientation?

New Student Orientation (NSO) begins August 29-30
What is NSO? New Student Orientation is your ticket to a great semester at CWC. Earn academic credit while you learn college survival skills. This is a great way to network, find your way around campus, and make new friendships that last a lifetime. Best of all, when classes begin— you're all settled and ready to start.
