Christmas break = time to relax

Hello again! It's Kelly! I hope this semester has been great for all of you and I hope that this upcoming semester is also a good one! When i look back at all that has happened since i graduated from high school, it seems like a very long time and it seems like i have been through a lot but in reality it really has not been that long and I still have a lot more experiences to go through and a LOT of things to look forward to. Since it is finals week I am sure it is very stressful for everyone and it is stressful for me too! But I am just trying to remind myself that if i work really really hard on this last week then i can have an amazing Christmas break and finally relax! And since it is the Christmas season I think it gives everyone a great opportunity to reflect on this past year and everything you are grateful for and everything that has happened that has made you who you are today. I love Christmas and the chance i have to spend it with my family and i hope all of you have that opportunity as well! Well good luck with finals and have a wonderful Christmas! See you all next year!

Kelsey wishes everyone a Merry Christmas

Hey everybody! The fall 2010 semester is almost over! I can’t wait for Christmas break. I’ve had a couple of big finals already but this upcoming week I have lots and lots more. It’s pretty tough near the end of the semester but I am still excited for everything! In some of my classes, I think I’m going to be kind of sad that they are over because of how fun they were. All the teachers up at Central Wyoming College are so brilliant and enjoyable. In conclusion, I’m excited for this last week of school and the finals that end my classes. Well, Merry Christmas! :)

With the last week of college approaching before Christmas Break I feel no stress. Maybe this should worry me! But I am not, this semester has had its hard times but I feel like it has been a fairly easy semester. Like everyone else I am ready for a nice long break, even more exciting, the spring semester is shortened. What can get better than that? But for now it is time to get back to studying!

Only two days left

Pastels and oil paintings by Riverton artist Dennis Robbins are on display at Central Wyoming College in the Robert A. Peck Arts Center Gallery through Dec. 17.

Robbins, a self-taught artist, has been making art in other forms, including photography and painting, for most of his life.

Robbins has won numerous awards for his work, including the Grand Wyoming Artist Award in 2007. His work, influenced by Charles Russell and Homer Winslow, can be found in the permanent art collections at Central Wyoming College, the Fremont County Library system and Riverton Memorial Hospital as well as numerous private collections from the west coast to Ohio.

The gallery is open during regular college hours.

Semester ending

I finish my first semester of college realizing that I learned much, and have much to learn. I enjoyed all of my classes this semester, they were challenging and interesting. They definitely made me want to come back for more. Contrary to many beliefs which state that you cannot live off campus and still be involved, I have discovered the balance. I haven’t mastered it but I’m trying! This semester was great because I didn’t go straight to my classes and then home; I stayed on campus to study, met new people, went to eat at the cafeteria, and attended many activities. There are so many things to get involved in here at CWC that many take for granted or simply do not know about. Don’t be a victim! Look around you! Be brave and start a conversation with someone new, take a walk around campus and you’ll find information about activities, important dates, and more. We are so blessed to have these, so don’t make excuses, make time to get involved and enjoy the time you have here. I know as much as I’m looking forward to Christmas break, I will still be looking forward to new schedules, new classes, new friends, and acquaintances next semester. There is so much to learn and experience in this life. So dive in, rock the boat, stir the pot, and risk everything!

Hello Again!

Just Christina checking in to update all of my readers on how my school life has been going. As you know, the National Finals Rodeo is currently been going on in Las Vegas, Nevada and my friends and I have been watching every single night!! It is pretty neat because my roommate is related to a person who is competing and I grew up with one of the competitors. This makes watching the NFR so much more intense and exciting for us to cheer on these people through the television! Even if they can’t hear us.

Finals are going on this week and next week and I have been super booked with multiple papers to write, a power point presentation and many tests. I am just able to squeeze this blog in to update those of you who read this! I am really excited for this semester to be over because it is time to have a break and spend time with my family. Also, my birthday is coming up and I can’t wait to celebrate! Believe it or not, my birthday is on Christmas Eve and I feel very lucky because I can celebrate my birthday with my family.

I am also excited because the Equine Club has decided to have a movie and a pot luck dinner! I enjoy spending time with my friends before going home and I really like having the free meal. I believe that we are going to watch many movies and most of them I imagine will be horse movies. (Go figure!) Recently my roommate and I put up a Christmas tree in our room and it has some countdown gifts underneath. We have been opening one a day so we have some way to keep count of how many days are left until Christmas. Our tree is beautiful as well. It has a shiny silver star, glittered ornaments, shiny garland with candy canes and light bulbs attached and it’s a white tree that is pre-lit. The skirt is even shiny!! The skirt is silver with glittery silver snowflakes all over it!!

However, it is about time to get back to work on my homework. Yeah, boring….I know, trust me! But the sooner I get it done the closer the end of the semester gets here!! Have a wonderful Christmas and thanks again for reading!!

Meet Kelly

Hey! My name is Kelly Phister and this is my first year at CWC. I am majoring in psychology and plan on becoming a substance abuse counselor! I have had a great first semester and I am really excited to continue my education here at CWC. Fortunately I was able to take Dual Credit courses throughout high school so I got a head start when i started here. Well i guess i should back up a little...I was born in Utah but lived in Northern California for the first 3 years of my life (yeah it's confusing) and have lived in the great town of Riverton since then! I really enjoyed growing up here and going to high school here too. I was involved in a lot of things in high school. I was on the volleyball team practically all four years...(long story)... and i was also on the track team. I loved attending the football games and basketball games as well. One of the dual credit courses i mentioned earlier was a Culinary Arts class and i took that the last two years of high school with a few of my really good friends. This class, for me, was a GREAT experience because we got to compete in competitions around the state and my senior year we actually took first place at the state competition in Sheridan, Wyoming. It was so fun to compete and actually win something that huge! Yes, if you are wondering we had a huge trophy! haha :) Anyways, I really loved high school in Riverton and I was pretty sad to leave that part of my life. But when I started school here at CWC, I found out that it was actually a lot better than high school and that I could be involved in a lot of things in college too! I am a Quality Leader and I got to participate in intramural volleyball every week and it has been so much fun! Well that's about all I have to say for now! Thanks for reading!

Meet Michelle

There are the best of times and there are the worst of times. But where does stuffing your face with food fit in? Got to love Thanksgiving!! This one just happens to be extra special for my family and I. We have a place down in St. George, Utah, so we packed our things on Monday and left after my brother got out of school. Mind you that is 3:30 p.m., the drive to St. George is a good ten hour drive. We arrive at one in the morning, and spent a nice week down there. Got our fill of TV watching in, for we do not have one at our house in Wyoming, well cable that is.
Saturday rolls around and like always, your always sad to leave the good life. We pack our things and hit the road at 11:30 a.m. with the thought of being home around nine-ish. Boy were we wrong! Like always going home we stop by the cheese factory and pick up some fresh cheese and curds a.k.a squeaky cheese. We then quickly get back on the road. Although, if you knew my family you would know that we couldn’t make this drive without stopping by Cabela’s first. Even though it was a little out of our way we decide it was a great idea. Two and a half hours later we walked out of there. My dad then gets this grand idea that he thinks he has a short cut to get us to Provo Canyon. Couple of roads and an hour later, come to find out dad was wrong. We finally get back on the interstate and then take a wrong exit. Once again my dad thinks he can get us to where we need to be without being on the interstate again. We end up taking this road that follows the foot of the mountains and thank goodness for GPS, I was about to look it up and see that this road was taking us nowhere. So that took an hour and a half. Turning our ten hour drive into a fourteen hour drive, for we finally stopped and asked for directions adding on more time. Some people are able to make it through several states, oh no, not my family we can’t even make it out of Utah. All in all it makes for a good laugh. That was after we, yet again, got home at one in the morning. This Thanksgiving has for sure made a mark in my mind.

Meet Christina

Hello Readers! I’m Christina Albertini and I am the Vice President of the Quality Leaders as well as the Student Representative for the Equine Club, a residential assistant for campus housing and I also work in the tutor lab in CWC’s Student Success Center. If you continue reading you will find out a little bit of each of the previous activities I mentioned!! Quality Leaders is a prestigious scholarship given to students that interview for the scholarship and show top notch qualities such as honor, honesty, creativity, abilities to lead as well as follow and many more traits! Grades are also important in order to be a quality leader as it shows a student’s ability to be going to school fulltime and help the school and community in projects. A project that many students recently took part in was promoting the new Health and Science Building that had to be passed by vote on November 2, 2010. Ways in promoting the new building such as hanging door signs, putting up road signs, performing skits and by waving signs and supporting CWC roadside on Election Day.
A recent activity that the Equine Club put on was a fun day with activities for anyone! There were many activities for horseback riders and for individuals that don’t own or have never ridden a horse before! Some games that were played are the magazine race, cowhorse barrels, stick horse barrels and the egg and spoon race! More normal fun day activities that were participated in are barrels, poles and showmanship. The turnout for the fun day was fantastic. All the prizes were awarded to the winners and lunch was provided. One of the great things about the Equine Club is that anyone, horse related or not, can join and have fun. This is the third semester for me being in the Equine Club and I have to say that the members are all fun and full of fire!! In fact this year we voted on our sweaters to be John Deere Green and the print to be John Deere Yellow instead of the regular CWC orange, black and white. The Equine Club is always welcome to having new members and to people who may only have an interest in horses! Feel free to come to the meetings on every other Monday at the Equine Center! The next meeting will be the first Monday back from Thanksgiving break.
To me, being a residential assistant (R.A.) on campus is a really neat job. By being a R.A. I get to meet almost all of the students that live on campus at least once in a semester. I love meeting people and making new friends so this job is really good for me to be able to do that. I recommend any students that plan on going to school here next fall should apply for the residential assistant job. It is also good for students that might not have the money to drive to school every day to have this job because it allows the R.A. to have free room and board. That’s right! I get to stay in housing for free! And get my meals paid for too!! However, being an R.A. does mean that there is late night working hours and all day shifts on the weekend as well so I suppose you could consider these working shifts as your food and housing. There are many different activities that go on in housing on campus! Early in the fall semester there is some beach volleyball that goes on and there are also karaoke contests that go on as well as pumpkin carving and barbeques! The housing on campus has normal dorms where individuals have roommates (Residence Hall), dorms where an individual has his/her own room but shares a bathroom with two other residents (Mote Hall), and then there are the apartments (East and West Apartments). The apartments have from one to four residents in each apartment and just this fall been supplied with new furniture!! There is no co-ed housing on campus unless it’s a married couple or family.
I was hired by CWC to tutor students in all math courses and Physics. Being a math tutor really helps me with my basic math skills and allows me to develop my math skills. The Student Success Center allows me to work on my homework, have free tutoring by tutors with experience in the class that I may need help in and it’s a great place to meet new people. The Student Success Center has free tutoring for all students taking classes from CWC and I think that even the silliest questions should be answered; all students should take advantage of the free tutoring. There is also an open computer lab attached to the tutor lab that is also free for all CWC students to use. The tutor lab even has free food on occasion and always has free coffee. There is a fridge for students to put their lunches while they are in class and even a microwave!! The staff in the Student Success Center is all incredibly nice and easy to talk to! If you are reading this and plan on a tour or are already a student at CWC, just stop in and say hello! You are bound to make new friends!!
Now that I have told you probably more than you wanted to know about CWC I would like to share with you more about myself. I am currently studying to get my degree in Mathematics here at CWC and will graduate at the end of the Spring 2011 semester with my Associates of Math degree and my degree for my general education. I am very excited to graduate this coming spring and am also very nervous to face the real world. Next fall I plan on continuing my education in order to get a degree in Electrical Technologies but am unsure of where I will go and how long it will take. I suppose this is will be my next blog subject!! So keep checking in for my next entry!!
Thanks, readers, for your interest!!

Meet Kelsey

Hey! So far, this semester is going great. As a first year student, I am learning lots about professors and about everything the school has to offer. I can’t believe this semester is almost over. It went by in a blink of an eye. I can tell that it is starting to become the holiday season and not just because the weather is changing, but because finals are coming and professors are planning out the next four or five weeks exactly and assigning when the exams will be. It’s actually a little scary but it should go very well. I am extremely excited for this semester and even more excited to come back in the spring.

Looking for something to do tomorrow night?

Sign up in the Activities Office for a Tribal Fusion Dance Lesson tomorrow November 16 from 7-10pm in the Dance Studio AC138

Meet Joshua

Well I can officially say this is the first time that I have ever wrote a blog, but here we go. My name is Josh Graham and I am a freshman here at CWC. I have lived here in Riverton my whole life. I am a Quality Leader and involved in a variety of different clubs and activities here on campus. I am majoring in Pre-Health, but I tell myself that I am majoring in professional health because it sounds way more legit. The plan is to be a college bum for a while and try to get into medical school. I also work for Steve McCallister on campus conducting research on the effect of West Nile Virus in Fremont County. Our work on campus pretty much saves lives everyday but that’s no big deal or anything! Lol jk, but really.

College has been a big transition for me, and a good transition at that. Its so weird coming from high school where you pretty much know everybody’s name, and everybody knows yours, to coming up to the college where you get to meet new people everyday. Coming from playing football, basketball, and soccer to playing intramural volleyball, and yes you heard me right; volleyball. Never thought playing volleyball every Tuesday night would be so much fun!

But college has been great so far, and if you want to get to know me better don’t be a stranger, there is no doubt that you will find me somewhere on campus!

Meet Sharrayah

Hey everyone! It’s me again – sophomore Sharrayah Harris! This semester has been a blast. I cannot believe that it is almost over again. We just started advising week and I am thrilled to start signing up for the classes that I want to take next semester. It is going to get a little interesting when I start figuring out how to balance work, school, and being a Quality Leader! It will be tough but I know that I can do it. Although this semester has been pretty hectic, it has been a lot of fun being a graphic design and photography major. I love being an Art major, I do not have to do too many classes involving math or science; they are just not my forte. I feel so much more at home with my computer, digital camera and lenses than anywhere near a calculator and logarithms. Well it looks like I better get back to my homework.
Oh, one last thing - I was taking a break from editing some photos on my computer and I came across an article that just made me smile! GO WYOMING!!! --- http://247wallst.com/2010/10/04/the-best-and-worst-run-states-in-america-a-survey-of-all-fifty/#ixzz11bBHjHoJ

Buffalo tipi on display

A buffalo hide tipi constructed as part of a St. Stephen’s Indian School project is on display in the lobby of Central Wyoming College’s new Intertribal Education and Community Center.

The tipi, which is set up under the drum-inspired oculus in the center of the lobby, is on display through the month of November, which has been designated as Native American Month.  It can be viewed during regular college hours.  CWC Diversity Coordinator, Sergio A. Maldonado, Sr.,  can be contacted for tours by student groups at 855-2285.

Meet Seth

This is my first semester of college and it took me a couple of weeks to adjust to the schedule of college and some of the expectations for classes. I had stayed up on my homework, read most of the material and I was confident I had fully adjusted to this new lifestyle.
…….And then midterms came.
I know midterms are only a warm up to the eventual finals for each class, but I still wasn’t prepared for the week of hell, exams and papers for five days straight. I became a stressed out, studying wreck always focusing on the closest test. Every night I stayed in and crammed until it felt like my brain had swelled up with too much information.
How effective was this studying method?
The effectiveness of this learning style is still unknown to me. All my test grades are yet to be disclosed to, but it made me realize if you want to succeed in the classroom you have to put more effort into your studies then you did in high school. Now I feel like I know what to expect during this time of year and will try not to be a complete wreck when it comes to the testing.

Central Wyoming College counselor Lance Goede was presented the Outstanding Service Award by the Wyoming Counseling Association at a recent annual conference held in Casper.

Goede, a new member of the Wyoming Mental Health Professionals Licensing Board, serves on the college’s Behavioral Intervention Team.

Goede also coordinates the “Students of Concern” group, which in collaboration with faculty and staff attempts to proactively identify students in need of additional assistance or guidance, and provides them with counseling and/or mental health service.

“We are proud of his accomplishments, service to our students and contributions to CWC,” said Vice President for Student Services Mohammed Waheed.

Goede earned his master’s in counseling from the University of Wyoming and joined the CWC staff first as the housing and student life director. He is also the primary force behind the annual college counselors’ retreat.

Meet Hailey

Hi! I’m currently in my second year at Central Wyoming College working on my General Studies degree. The past few weeks have been a little crazy because I just finished up midterms. It was rough getting through all of the tests, but now that it is over I feel like a big load has been lifted off of my shoulders!
Each year midterms reminds me of how important it is to study for each class as much as possible throughout the semester, not just the night before the big test. Studying frequently for short periods of time allows me to stay on top of all the new information coming my way in each of my different classes. I am also a Resident Assistant in housing this year, which is a lot of fun but also requires an additional time commitment. I picked up a free planner from the CWC mailroom and using it properly to write down important dates, due dates and activities has helped me stay organized.
This week is Halloween Sprit Week at CWC and I am looking forward to dressing up for the different days. Getting involved on campus is a must to make your experience enjoyable! So far this year has gone by fast, I can’t believe it’s almost November! No matter how stressful school and life may become, don’t forget to stop, take a deep breath and count your blessings! =) Have a great winter!

Meet Rachel

After my first week of college I was informed that I had Mono and anything you could think of to go along with it. I was to stay in bed, sleep, eat when I could, sleep, sleep, and then sleep a little more LOL. Being a QL, it seems like it would be obvious for me to say that I'm a work and then play kind of girl, but since that's just who I am, I'll tell you lying in bed involved neither work or play, and as much as the work is never as good as the play, I of course, would rather have been working than lying in that bed. So over the almost three weeks I spent being tired and twittling my thumbs I came to realize how much I appreciate all the work. . Everything worked out so well. I was really thankful, all of my instructors were cooperative and they helped a lot. I got everything completed, now I just have to keep up lol.

This whole experience reminded me as each day, as I got out of bed and returned to my classes, to be thankful and appreciative that I had strength to do just that. I started enjoying my classes more.  Talk about good coming from bad, I've never believed it more. I'm sure this great attitude I've acquired will begin to fade around midterms, but what can I say? Until then, I'll be trying...

No Electronic Services this Saturday

DON'T FORGET!

Central Wyoming College will be without electronic and web services Saturday, Oct. 9 as the state’s core network, administered by the Wyoming Department of Education, is moved.
All Wyoming Equality Network gear and circuits are being moved to a more secure location, causing an all-day outage to the college’s website, the student portal myCENTRAL, and remote access to CWC’s network. The outage also prevents use of the library card catalog, electronic payments and online testing.

David and Lisa

CWC stages its first production for the 2010-11 season Oct. 6 in the Robert A. Peck Arts Center Theatre at 7:30 p.m.

Based on the Academy Award-nominated 1962 film of the same name, David and Lisa is the story of two mentally ill adolescent teens who meet at a special school. Myers said the “characters are really fascinating. It really helps you understand being mentally ill,” he explained. “Instead of being peripheral characters, they are the central characters.”

Nightly performances will take place Oct. 6-9 at 7:30pm.  A matinee is also scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets for the show are $8 for adults and $6 for senior citizens 60 and over and youth. Tickets can be purchased Monday through Friday, 3-6 p.m. at the Arts Center Box Office. To purchase tickets by phone, call 855-2002 or 800-865-0190 and leave a voice mail. The college can accept credit cards.

October 4-8 is CWC’s observance of Domestic Violence Awareness, which is the entire month of October.  The Counseling and Career Services Department is co-sponsoring two events that week that would be very interesting to Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Human Services, and Psychology majors, and anyone interested in the topic of domestic violence.

For Tuesday, October 5

In conjunction with Fremont county service providers and Central Wyoming College there will be a Panel Discussion on October 5, at 1:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. at the Little Theater located in the Student Center on campus.  The panel discussion will center around the services available on the Wind River Reservation and the surrounding area.  The members of the panel will include Judge St. Clair,  Chief Justice, Tribal Court; Paul Swenson, FBI Special Agent; Rita Gatlin, FBI Victim Specialist; Chief Joseph Brooks, WRPD; Roma Jimerson, Tribal Prosecutor; Christian Pulver, Certified Domestic Violence Facilitator; and Kerry Jacobson, Assistant United States Attorney.  Under discussion will be what each members role is in the fight against domestic violence, and what services are available to victims of domestic violence and their families.

For Wednesday, October 6

Come watch “Sin By Silence,” on October 6, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Little Theater in the Student Center.  This is a powerful movie about women who have been convicted for killing their spouses in response to the abuse they were subject to.  Join us for this unique opportunity to learn about the issues of domestic violence from a survivor’s perspective.  The screening will be followed by a discussion with Stacy Crosley, daughter of a survivor featured in the film who was the first woman in California to use the battered woman’s defense.

If you have any questions about these events, stop by the Counseling and Career Services office in Main Hal 123F. or email Lance.
