Campus alert

Central Wyoming College is taking precautions after receiving a message of a potentially threatening nature on the main campus during finals week.

The message was called to college officials’ attention on Thursday evening. The CWC Crisis Management Team met at 7:30 am today with members of the Riverton Police Department to further investigate the situation.

Erring on the side of caution, police officers will be on patrol at the main campus in Riverton and are working closely with the college Campus Safety department.

“We are advising our students, employees and visitors to the campus to be cautiously aware,” said CWC President Jo Anne McFarland, adding that the threat is not specific. “We understand that this is a very stressful time for our students, but we want to make sure that we take any potential threat seriously, because safety is our top concern.”

CWC Theatre presents The Wind in the Willows

Central Wyoming College brings a classic piece of children’s literature to the Robert A. Peck Arts Center Theatre when it presents The Wind in the Willows Dec. 4 and 5 and Dec. 11-13.

Adapted from Kenneth Grahame’s novel about animals who live as humans, The Wind in the Willows will delight children, director Mike Myers said. “We definitely think that adults will find it very entertaining as well.”

The Wind in the Willows features four main characters, Toad, Rat, Mole and Badger, a group of “country gentleman bachelors” who live in the English countryside.

“Toad dominates the story,” Myers said of the character played by first-year theater student Jeremy Gross. Toad is rich, self centered, obsessive and gets himself into all kinds of trouble.
Rat, played by theater student Josiah Sifuentes, is a sophisticated scholarly water rat who takes the shy and timid Mole, played by Ted Haworth, under his wing.
Rick Wiblemo, a broadcasting and theater student at CWC, is the Badger, who pretends to be rough and gruff. He’s older and wiser and the others look up to him. He is intent on changing Toad’s impulsive and conceited ways.

All four of the leading characters are docile riverbank animals, who are supported by numerous rabbits, squirrels and hedgehogs. The play features a cast of 37 actors, several of who are local children. Many of the actors play multiple roles.

There will be a special 10 a.m. performance on Dec. 5 and a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Dec. 13.

Tickets for the show are $8 for adults and $6 for senior citizens 60 and over and youth. Tickets can be purchased Monday through Friday, 3-6 p.m. at the Arts Center Box Office. To purchase tickets by phone, call 855-2002 or 800-865-0190 and leave a voice mail. The college can accept credit cards.

Patrick Goggles kicks off Diversity series at CWC

Rep. W. Patrick Goggles kicks off the Intertribal Education and Community Center Speaker Series at Central Wyoming College with a presentation Thursday, Dec. 3 at 3:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre.

Goggles, who was recently named the Wyoming House Democratic Minority Whip, is the first in a series of speakers to address cultural diversity in academia, said CWC Diversity Committee Chair Sergio Maldonado.

A former CWC student and graduate of the University of Wyoming, Goggles is a member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe and a lifelong resident of Ethete. “He is extremely involved in the Northern Arapahoe culture and life ways,” said Maldonado. Goggles is the executive director of the Northern Arapaho Housing Authority and is a graduate of Leadership Wyoming.

He is a member of the House Education Committee, the Travel, Recreation and Cultural Resources Committee, and is on three select committees: School Facilities, Tribal Relations, and Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

Maldonado said the speaker series continues this spring with speakers scheduled for presentations in February, March and April. The series is capped off by a powwow set for Saturday, May 1, which is the Wyoming American Indian Day.

The speaker series is open to the public. The Little Theatre is located in the CWC Student Center.
